Rolly Polly

So I was chill-axin in playland tonight with the kids and I put Caroline down for some tummy time. I watched her do her baby pushup and I told her how strong she was. Then out of nowhere, she rolled onto her back. Sorry, no video yet but we will try. I am still not sure if this was an accident or actually represents developmental progression but regardless she can start talking smack to her brother because he was 4 months old when he first rolled over. "Yeah, well whatever Quentin, I rolled over earlier than you did!"

aaaaaaaahpools

we've been trying to go apple picking for a few weeks now, but quentin's need to nap and rain have gotten in our way. finally the stars aligned yesterday and we were able to get there on a beautiful day, prior to nap time. the place was a mad house - there was an enormous line to wait in to buy your bags. and we were lucky - it was even longer by the time we were done and heading home. - quentin loved it. "aaaaaaaahpool" is one of his favorite words so he was pointing them out everywhere. picking them off the tree was ok for him, but he really liked picking them off the ground and putting them in our bags. we just put what he gave us in and tossed the bad ground apples when he wasn't watching. he munched on an apple the entire time. -

as always, caroline enjoyed herself :)

3 months old!

caroline is 3 months old today! it is truly amazing how time flies! she loves sitting up, which makes us very glad for the bumbo. she adores quentin - she lights up when he comes near her. she is starting to hold on to toys, rattles, etc. well, at least as long as Q will let her. he usually snatches them from her and says, "nooo!!" i think her 1st tooth is imminent - she's been drooling like crazy!

what a difference a year makes!

i realized that quentin took similar photos for his 1st and 2nd birthdays. it's so fun to see how much he has changed! -

he is so much taller, slimmer, and has so much more hair!! but the same the big grin and awesome choice in plaid ;)

getting better already!

quentin's face is already starting to get a lot better. the swelling has gone down and fortunately he seems to love his antibiotic. i gave him a dose earlier and he wanted to lick every drop of it from the syringe-thing. he goes in to the doctor tomorrow for a quick check-up to make sure it is healing properly and isn't getting infected.
interestingly, quentin has learned recently that he should grin at the camera and say "cheese" which is odd since we never ask him to do that! (and by the way, i do put pants on my child. he wasn't pleased with that today and removed them.)

bumbo!

yeah! caroline is finally big enough for the bumbo! and thus far, she is enjoying the heck out of it!! -

the morning after

the doctor said that Q's face would probably look worse before it looked better. yeah. she was right. he's swollen and puffy and the bruising is starting. he doesn't even seem to notice. he keeps telling me that he has a boo-boo but then points to the scrape on his elbow that's been there for days. he happily munched on his breakfast while i snapped these pics. he wouldn't look at the camera because jack's big music show was on and i was obstructing his view :)

dog in the dog house. boy in the ER.

we made our first trip to the ER this evening. jeremy is on call tonight so he's at the hospital and i was 15 minutes away from Q's bed time. i almost made it through my solo day. almost. Q flopped on the couch. he didn't flop on jack (the surly old, blind dog) but i guess he was close enough that he surprised the dog who snapped at him. and unfortunately Q's face was in the way. jack got him pretty good. there was a lot of blood and i don't do well with blood, but what choice did i have? i got him cleaned up and saw that he had 2 teeth marks on his eye lid, 2 below his eye, and a tooth puncture on his cheek. the bleeding stopped pretty quickly and nothing looked too deep but we wanted to be sure so i consulted with jeremy via phone/email, my aunt the nurse, and the pediatrician's nurse line. consensus was that he probably wouldn't need stitches but should have his wounds cleaned out and get a prescription for antibiotics. so my aunt stayed at out house with caroline while i ventured off to the ER. - that place was a freaking zoo. i counted 6 kids already waiting in the waiting room when we got there plus a ton of adults. there was one dude actively puking every couple of minutes which was pretty awesome. we waited for well over an hour and Q was getting cranky. he's 2, was bit by an dog, and was up way past his bed time. i just let him scream though, hoping that maybe that would move us up in the priority. i don't know if that's why, but a minute or two later they called us back. - the doctor rinsed out his bites and then gave him some motrin and antibiotic. no stitches needed, thankfully. but i can already tell that he is going to have a doozy of a black eye (so glad we did photos 2 days ago!) jack is in the dog house and will not be allowed near the kids. if they're up and about he will be crated or confined to the office where Q is not allowed. i know jack didn't mean to hurt him, but the dog is only going to get older, blinder, and grumpier.

photos!

we undertook quite the feat today - taking caroline and quentin for photos for their accomplishments in the fine art of aging (3 months and 2 years, respectively.) they did surprisingly well. Q actually does really well with it. he likes hamming it up for the camera. caroline was not as easy, mostly because she can't really sit and can't hold her head up on her own for too long. she also is drooling like crazy (oh no - teeth!) and was starting to get hungry. this is why the last photo is her holding my finger. because we needed one more shot but caroline was d-o-n-e. most surprising of all was the fact that Q actually held caroline in his lap for some brother/sister shots. they have cute matching outfits, though you can't really see them well in the photos. quentin's shirt says, "slugs, and snails, and puppy dog tails" and caroline's onesie says, "sugar and spice and everything nice." 'cause that's what little boys/girls are made of. -
