2th

totally recycling this awesome (ly lame) post title to announce that caroline has her 2nd tooth, next to the first one that appeared last week. and today, she used her teeth on me for the first time. i am not a fan. weaning will commence if that keeps up.

mama's boy

i don't consider quentin to be a mama's boy at all. if anything, he's a daddy's boy - he loves it when daddy picks him up from day care etc. - but in the mornings, he is a total mama's boy. he'll play in his room semi-quietly for a while after he wakes up. given that this generally begins around 5 a.m. we/i desperately want to keep sleeping, so we try to ignore it as long as we can, hoping he'll magically decide to go back to sleep (never has, but we can dream, right?) after a little while, he's ready to get out of there. so we/i hear over the baby monitor: -
"momma! momma! momma! momma!"
-
"momma! momma! momma! momma!"
-
"momma! momma! momma! momma!"
-
"momma! momma! momma! momma!"
-
"dadda?!?"

from the mouths of babes

pulling into the church parking lot today: "no wanna church" - and leaving church today: "no mo church" - also, Q's gym is decorated for christmas so now whenever he sees evergreen garland anywhere he says, "gym!"

solid gold

caroline tried her first official (i.e. not illicit... dad) solid food today. it seemed like time to start solids, given how intently she watches us when we eat or drink something. she was seriously trying to take sips of my diet coke today! so she had some rice cereal mixed in milk. - she didn't seem to love it, but she didn't resist when the spoon came at her. much of it ended up on her bib, but i think she enjoyed the act of being fed, even if she didn't quite dig the rice. -

and Q supervised.

there's a baby in there somewhere

the things they know

quentin was up at 4:30 this morning. he played (relatively) quietly in his room until 5 or so when he started calling for me. i went in there and crawled into his bed, hoping he'd snuggle back in next to me, or at a minimum, continue to play quietly. he played for a bit, but then he sat on me and yelled, "ett up!"

short stories

quentin has started counting. except that he skips most of the numbers. one, two, fie, sicks, seben, ine. -
********
- the boy loves his juice. the thing is we dilute it like crazy. in each sippy cup he gets just a splash of juice, not even a full grown-up size sip. but if you try to pass off a cup of water as juice, he knows. and he will hand it back to you, firmly saying, "NO." -
********
- if he doesn't like what is on the TV (like when the tivo has the audacity to try to record a grown-up show) or when the TV is off and he wants it on, quentin will shove the remote in your hand and state his demand, usually, "bish" or "trucks" or "melmo" or "woo wooooood" (word world.) -
********
- "broken" is one of his favorite words. he will show you every single teddy graham or goldfish cracker that is missing a body part, holding it up and announcing, "broken." he then puts it out of its misery. -
********
- he also loves the concept of "big" these days. if holding two pine cones, he will show you the larger one and say, "big." this morning he was obsessed with the giant cartoon goldfish on the pepperidge farm box. -
********
- he LOVES all the christmas decorations on people's houses. as we drive by each and every house with christmas displays we hear, "ooooooooooooh. yights. yights on owse." (lights on house, if you aren't fluent in toddler.) maybe we should put up a tree this year?

the tooth is out there

caroline has her first tooth!
- after weeks and weeks of drooling and gnawing, the bottom right front tooth has cut through her gum! - i tried to get a picture of it, but she doesn't want to show it off.

my brother rules

my brother spent the weekend here installing new counters in our kitchen. soooo pretty. i forgot to take true before pics, but you can sort of see the nasty old ones in the kitchen pics in this post. - he also installed a shiny new faucet for us too, which makes our old sink look pretty darn good. - of course, this now further highlights that we have to do something about the truly nasty cabinets. soon. and the faux brick back splash and the new gap between countertops and gross fake brick. -

sitting pretty

bah bah black sheep

this past sunday was the christmas pageant at church. like his 1st grade and younger cohorts, quentin was a sheep - the very youngest little lamb. we were very worried how he would do because a: he's two, b: he's quentin, and c: every time he's been in the actual sanctuary at church he loudly points out the fans, flags, and lights.
-
surprisingly, he did very well. he stayed quietly with me in the pew while waiting for his big scene. he was successfully herded up to the alter with the rest of his flock. though he quickly found where grandma and grandpa were sitting and sat with them for the rest of the pageant. if he had not behaved, the title of this post would have been "black sheep of the family." :)

some pics from before, during, and after this amazing performance

double trouble

cousin calder visited from chicago back in september. the boys had a blast tearing apart grandma's house. not sure if it has recovered. -
- and caroline was there too. -
