caroline is a girly girl. a true diva. she introduces herself as princess. she insists on picking out her own clothes (always a dress or skirt, described as "cute" when selecting from the closet.) she must pick her own shoes. she must accessorize as much as possible (bows, headbands, jewelry.) once she's dressed, she simply must check herself out in the full-length mirror, always remarking, "i look beautiful today." the other day she asked me if she could get sparklies in her ears like her friend briston at school (pierced ears.) she's 2 and a half. where did she get all this from??

Kiwi,
Was searching for a GF's blog and came across your. Started reading and came to your entry about your little diva, Caroline asking to have her ears pierced like her little friend. Like you, I had a girlie girl on my hands too and was unsure whether or not to have her ears pierced at 2.5 yrs old.
I asked our ped and was surprised to hear her encourage me to go ahead when mommy could care for them. She said when little girls want it done at 3-5 yrs old, they often fail to care for them properly during the healing time. She gave me some suggestions for moms having their dd's ears pierced which included some OTC meds to minimize any discomfort. Also she recommended Piercing Pagoda due to their level of professional training and experience in infant/toddler ear piercing. I tried stickers and magnet earrings to see if she really wanted them pierced for about a month.
Admittedly, I went back and forth and procrastinated for one reason or another. However, one day I kept seeing more and more babies and little girls w/ cute little earrings and I finally decided that I wanted them for our dd too. What was the "tipping point?" Well, one night, she came into the family room with one of my earrings and asking how to put it in her ears to look like mommy! Dh said for me to take her to have her ears pierced before we had to take her to the ER to remove it from her ear canal :) I followed our ped's tips and she did fine.
I'd say if your're thinking about it, then your mommy intuition is telling you now is best and I'd go ahead. You haven't missed the window of opportunity. Some say not to do it as a toddler, but our ped had some great ideas to follow for toddlers and little girls. If you'd like our ped's suggestions, write me an e-mail. I'll send your a pic of our dd with her earrings.
Write me an e-mail for our ped's tips if you'd like.
