sweet pickle?
but the twos are coming and she is getting sassy. she LOVES the word no and testing her boundaries. she is learning the fine art of the tantrum from her brother and is not ashamed to lay on the floor, kicking and screaming.
we are so in for it.

follow me!
there's this obnoxious radio ad we hear in the car all the time for forman mills, a local discount department store. it's one of those really loud, shouting ads with the announcer using his best growly, wrestling-match-promoter slash furniture-store-going-out-of-business voice… "designer men's shoes ten dollars, ladies' hats five dollars, and kids' socks just one dollar!"
Q loves this commercial. he giggles when it comes on. over the course of the commercial, the announcer probably shouts, "forman mills!" about fifteen times. Q mimics the guy each time, but he thinks that the dude is saying, "follow me!"
so even when we are not in the car, like if we are out for a walk or if Q is standing on something tall, he will shout, "follow me!"

all smiles
over the past few weeks, Q has been acting out a bit at school. not really sure what's been causing the behavior, but he's been driving his teacher crazy. to try to drive it into his head that bad behavior isn't acceptable, miss diana started tracking his day and rating each portion of the day with a smiley face, a frowny face, or a meh face. she shows him the face she is drawing and talks to him about it as she's doing it. he's consistently had 2-3 frowny faces per day, mostly centered around the times of day where he is expected to sit and participate in structured activities (circle time, etc.)
but yesterday, he got all smiley faces!
and they made a big deal about it too. she made him a certificate to commemorate the occasion and gave him a prize (bubbles!) he was very proud. now to see if any of it sunk in. my guess… no.
red light, green light
Q is big-time obsessed with traffic lights these days. he announces the color of every single traffic light we encounter (and on a 45-minute each way commute, that's a lot.) but not only does he announce the color of each light, he also tells me what to do (even if i am not the one driving,) "red light, mommy. stop." "green light, mommy. go." but the thing is, he doesn't realize that traffic does not work exactly like the red light green light game. because when the light is red, he wants me to stop immediately rather than pull up behind the line of cars. and when the light turns green, he reprimands me over and over, "green, mommy, GO. GO" even when the cars in front of me haven't started moving yet.

this disposable straw belongs to quentin
last week, we got an email from daycare reminding us of the rules about labeling your children's personal belongings. i immediately dismissed it, knowing i am a super-star of labeling, having spent a bunch of dollars on semi-permanent sticky labels and such for all their lunch containers, sippy cups, etc. (i refuse to comply with the labeling of clothes both out of laziness and thriftiness – can't resell clothes if they've got Q's name sharpied on them!) but then, when we arrived at school friday, miss diana audited Q's lunch box and clarified that everything needs to be labeled, not just Tupperware. everything – yogurt cup, string cheese, applesauce cup, box of raisins… all need labels. first and last name. it was still early and my brain-filter wasn't exactly turned on yet. I may have said, "are you f-ing kidding me? That's so fricking obnoxious."
because it is. i guess it is to help the teachers ensure that the kids are only eating their own food and not sharing amongst each other, food allergies, blah blah blah. not sure why i am so fired up about it, but it is really pissing me off. don't i pay enough money to send my kids here already? so not only do i have to pack my kids' lunch (when many similarly-priced and even lower-priced daycares PROVIDE meals) now i have to waste even more money and time labeling everything?? if the place wasn't so damn conveniently-located, i would be looking elsewhere.
it took me 16 labels to make the two kids' lunches today. that's 80 labels a week. they each had a whole, unpeeled clementine in their lunch box today. i stuck a label on them too, as an expression of my feelings about this absurd policy. too bad they probably won't get the joke.

car ride conversation this morning:
Q: mommy, i have a good day at school today i watch your phone tonight.
Me: ok, if you're good at school you can watch my phone.
Q: it's a good deal. you got that? ok. good.
i'm not really sure what i am getting out of this deal, other than sticky fingers all over my phone screen.
